Hamakua Coast: Located on the northeast side of the
island is the scenic Hamakua Coast. The tropical canyons are home to lush valleys,
rugged cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. As you travel the coastline you will be
inspired by the majestic Mauna Kea volcano and the wonderful ocean views below.
Honokaa: The town of Honokaa is one of the largest
along the Hamakua Coast. As you enter Honokaa you will be greeted with a plantation
type atmosphere with fruit trees and homes lining the main streets. Located in
Honokaa is the Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Plantation, which supports the claim that Honokaa is
the macadamia nut capital of the world.
Waipi'o Valley: Located just a few miles away from
Honokaa is the lush Waipi'o Valley. The valley is only accessible by hiking and four
wheel drive vehicles, keeping this valley in pristine condition. The Waipi'o
Valley
lookout has a pavilion where you can relax and gaze into the valley if you prefer not to
hike.
Hilo: Arriving in Hilo you will notice a long stretch
of coastline with the majestic Mauna Kea Volcano in the background. The town offers
may attractions which include Liliuokalani Gardens, historic churches and Wailoa River
State Park. Located outside of Hilo is one of the islands spectacular waterfalls,
Akaka Falls.
Puna District: The Puna District is located on the
southeast side of Hawaii and is home to the small towns of Keaau and Pahoa. The main
attraction of this area is Volcano Village and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. With
it's natural geological activity and fascinating views, this area should definitely be on
your sightseeing list.
South Point: Traveling further south will take you to
the southernmost point in the United States. Ka Lae or "Southpoint" as it
is referred to, features rugged coastlines and remnants of some of Hawaii's oldest
settlements.
Kona Coast: As you travel north from Captain Cook you
will reach the scenic and historic Kona Coast. The town of Kona offers a peaceful
atmosphere with plenty of shopping and dining. There are many historical sights in
Kona, as this was home to King Kamehameha the Great. The restored royal compound is
located adjacent to the King Kamehameha Hotel, which offers free guided tours. |
